 The Pro X2

The new Pro X2 is the latest system from Hi Cam.
It transmits live, high-quality video and audio from R/C aircraft and UAVs. The signal is picked up by the included receiver which connects to a TV monitor, VCR or camcorder.

This new model builds on all the strengths of our previous Micro 100 and Pro 100.

Like these previous models, it's carefully designed for the special needs of R/C aircraft and UAVs.

And like them, it avoids the design shortcuts and cheaper technologies used by most systems.

The new Pro X2 continues our philosophy of convenient 4.8 volt operation, CCD camera (not CMOS), micro size, high power, on-board microphone, 4 channels, patch antenna for receiver, and so on.

But it also takes some new leaps forward with the Multi-Video option, high gain patch antenna, and the super-tough Exposure-Optimized camera with 380 lines resolution and interchangeable lenses.

Many Reliability enhancements are incorporated into the design, and we also do tests & adjustments that are not commonly done by suppliers.

We back this up with a Warranty.

Every Pro X2 system comes with micro audio/video transmitter module, built-in microphone, audio/video receiver, antennas, a/v lead and wall transformer for the receiver. A 10-page owner's manual is included.

When you're testing, it's convenient to use mains power for the receiver. We supply transformers to suit the wall sockets in almost every country in the world.

The transmitter and receiver will handle both NTSC and PAL sources of video. When you put a particular format into the transmitter (NTSC or PAL), the same format will come out of the receiver.

The optional camera is available in NTSC or PAL. The choice depends which format is used by your video monitor or recorder. This is mainly determined by your country. If you are not sure, we can help you choose.

Please visit this page to ask questions.

Note:   The Pro X2 should NOT be used with 2.4GHz R/C gear such as Spektrum.

 Special Features

There are many considerations when choosing a quality system.
Please take the time to read about the Pro X2 features, and understand
the difference between the Pro X2 and competing products.

 IMPACT RESISTANT 380 LINE CAMERA

The new Hi Cam EO5-380 5 volt Exposure-Optimized camera.

Hold this tiny camera in your hand, and you'll notice its rock-solid case.

380 lines resolution for sharp pictures. And CCD (not CMOS) technology for strong, high-contrast images with vibrant colours.

We spent nearly a year exploring exposure parameters with the production engineers during its development. The camera is adjusted so that with bright sky, the camera is better than most at keeping the land correctly exposed.

Furthermore, automatic exposure is smooth, not jerky like many cameras on the market.
Low light performance is exceptional, ideal for dawn or evening flights. Looking at the sun, the camera still has a picture and doesn't disappear - critical for many situations.

The lens is screwed into the case and has no connection with the circuit board, so in an impact, the lens cannot transmit the shock to the board.

Lenses are interchangeable, and focus can be locked for guaranteed sharpness during flight. Each camera comes with a lens cap. Additional lenses are also supplied with lens caps.

With all these features, we think this is the best 5 volt CCD camera available in its class.

 MULTI-VIDEO OPTION

The challenge:
Micro CCD cameras need external power. Digital cameras and camcorders don't, and have different connectors. How can a micro transmitter connect to all of these? And supply power when needed? The Multi-Video design is a neat, light-weight solution. This Hi Cam innovation is a "first" for micro systems. Will it catch on? We'll see.

The key is to use a single connector that supplies both video and power. This method is used by the Multi-Video version of the Pro X2. It gives you total flexibility in what to connect.

Plug in the Hi Cam EO5-380 camera for stunning on-board footage. The transmitter powers the camera and receives video, all via a single plug.
Or connect a digital camera via our RCA interface cable and transmit a live preview while you take photos.

You can do either of these with the one transmitter! In one case the transmitter powers the camera, and in the other case it just receives video. It's like 2 systems in one.

Whether you already have a digital camera, or are thinking of getting one in the future, you know you'll be covered with the one investment.
And not just digital cameras. You can connect camcorders, or other equipment like thermal or night vision cameras - anything with "video out".

The Multi-Video version of the Pro X2 also has benefits for advanced users:

Custom leads - no hacking!
Make a custom lead for your digital camera or camcorder. Connect it to the Pro X2 via its tiny JR plug. This way you avoid bulky RCA plugs, and can make it the exact length you need. And because it's a separate lead, you don't need to cut or damage the leads of your Pro X2!

GPS Overlay
Users requiring on-screen display can connect a video overlay device between the camera and the transmitter without having to cut or damage the camera lead. Simply unplug the camera lead and insert an interface lead. Either make your own interface lead using 2 JR connectors, or ask us to make one.

A word of caution:
If you decide to make your own custom leads, please note that incorrect wiring could damage the transmitter. Such damage is not covered by warranty.
If in doubt, please talk to us and we'll do our best to help.

 BUILT-IN RELIABILITY

Reliability... It's one of the most important things to consider when choosing a system.

With cheaper products, there are many stories of intermittent problems, loose connections, and total failures.

And usually, there is no warranty.

So you either have to try and fix it for yourself, or buy another to replace it. It's a headache you just don't need.

Light-weight micro systems don't have the benefit of large, strong panel-mounted connectors, so it is important to develop techniques to make up for this.
Much of the development work for the Pro X2 concerned reliability.

The cables are soldered, and have additional support from a strong, reliable bonding method, rather than just relying on the solder connection.

Double insulation makes short circuits impossible, and internal padding prevents sharp edges cutting into cables.

In the rare case of failure of a Pro X2, we will thoroughly investigate the cause. Each transmitter contains liquid-sensing technology to establish whether water was involved in any failure. Any lessons learned will go towards further reliability enhancements.

 WARRANTY

Everyone knows that the operating environment on a remote-controlled aircraft is harsh. Many manufacturers of similar products won't offer any warranty, because of this harsh environment.

This is understandable, but it also means they avoid responsibility for failures due to design weaknesses.
And because they do not have a warranty to worry about, there is less incentive to build well.

We offer a 6-month warranty on all components, as an expression of our confidence in the systems.

This is made possible by high build quality and robust design.

 TRUE 4.8 VOLT OPERATION

The system runs on 4.8 volts, so the battery pack can be smaller and lighter (4 cells, not 10).

But the really great thing is you can use any 4.8 volt R/C battery pack with a JR or HiTec connector. Futaba version is available on request.

 ON-BOARD 4 CHANNEL SWITCH

4 channels means you run multiple systems at once, using different channels. It also lets you change to a different frequency in case there is interference from some other source.
 SMALL SIZE, SLIM PROFILE

The transmitter is extremely small and slim. It has a flat underside to aid mounting. Don't let the small size fool you - it's a powerful little unit.

 HIGH POWER - 200mW

Many cheap wireless systems have misleading power specifications. The power they quote is actually the consumption, not the true output.

We specify the true output. The tiny Pro X2 transmitter has an impressive 200mW of output power.

 QUALITY INSIDE AND OUT

The quality of the enclosure far surpasses other, more common fabrication methods. A closer look
will make this clear.

As part of our commitment to make the ultimate system, we designed the enclosure to a high standard. It looks good, but more importantly:
It's sealed against the elements better.

There's no tape to peel off.
(Tape is a common covering method.)

 Durability means better resale value.

You have the satisfaction of knowing
the good looks are an indication of
   the quality "under the bonnet."

 TESTS & ADJUSTMENTS

We perform a series of tests and adjustments to ensure all components satisfy our strict criteria.

We adjust or replace parts when necessary, even though they would be considered OK by other vendors.

The tests and adjustments include:

 Transmitter RF output power
 Antenna radiation uniformity
 Transmitter correctly on frequency
Adjust video to 1 Volt p-p
High contrast test - no "tearing"
Adjust audio gain to suitable level
 Vibration (no effect on picture)
 Camera focus
 No dead pixels in camera
 STANDARD OF PACKING

We recognise that your investment is precious and valuable. We take great care in packing your system so you will receive it in perfect condition.

Two layers of bubble wrap are used as lining on the inside of the box. Light-weight foam "peanuts" are used, and we make sure all sensitive items are protected from bumping into each other. The transmitter is supplied in its own bubble bag.

No component has ever been damaged during shipping, and this is a record we want to keep.

All parcels are insured, so you are protected from all damage or loss.

 A note about Power

The power level of this transmitter is 200mW. This is remarkable for such a tiny unit, and is responsible for its excellent long-range performance.

Please note that because of this high power, a licence may be required, depending on your country. It is the responsibility of the user to obtain a licence if required in their country.

We urge prospective customers to check their local laws. Click here for more information.

DuoCAM   Remote Camera Switcher US $40
Would you like to fly 2 cameras, and be able to switch between them?

Here's a device that uses a spare channel on your R/C to do just that!
How about a forward-looking camera and a second camera looking backwards?
Or a second camera to monitor a control surface, payload, or GPS display?
The second video source could even be a live preview from a digital camera.

The list is endless.

The gentVU DuoCAM is the result of a shared effort between Hi Cam and Gentles Ltd in the UK, involving extensive testing and refinement.

Our aim was to develop a switcher that would plug & play with the Pro X2.
We wanted it to be able to cut power to the unused camera to save batteries.

We also wanted the option of keeping both cameras on "hot standby" if the user preferred to avoid the one-second warm-up delay when switching cameras.

The DuoCAM does all this in a tiny elegant package.

The DuoCAM maintains our Multi-Video philosophy.
This lets you connect a variety of video sources:
You can connect our camera with the simplicity of a single plug, and the DuoCAM will automatically take care of power and video switching.
Or you can connect your digital camera via the RCA interface cable.

The power-switching characteristics of the DuoCAM are adjustable:

If you want to switch cameras and have only one camera powered at a time, simply move the joystick from one extreme to the other.

If you want to keep both cameras powered ("hot standby"), then move the joystick a small distance either side of neutral to change between cameras.

 Battery Accessories

The transmitter accepts any 4.8 volt pack with JR/HiTec connector, available from hobby stores.
Or, if you prefer better energy-to-weight ratio than the usual Ni-Cads, consider this battery.

MRB Mini Rechargeable Battery (900mAh) with Polyswitch fuse US $35
900 milliamp hours in a battery this small?

Yes, it's true - thanks to Nickel Metal Hydride technology. We use this type instead of the cheaper Ni-Cads for this reason.

The pack uses 4 small AAA cells, instead of the larger AA size.

The enormous capacity of this tiny 4.8 volt pack results in a transmission time of up to 2 hours, running both the transmitter and camera! All this from a tiny battery you can recharge again and again. And it doesn't have the memory effect associated with Ni-Cads... nor the environmental hazard of Cadmium.

Inside this battery, we embed a Polyswitch self-resetting fuse to protect your equipment in the unlikely event of a short circuit.
It's triggered if the current reaches 5 Amps. It then limits current to 2.5 Amps.
It never needs to be replaced. It simply resets itself.

The battery is available in flat or block shape, as shown.
We automatically supply the flat shape (the most popular) unless you advise otherwise.

Dimensions (block): 47x21x21mm (1.85" x 0.82" x 0.82")
Dimensions (flat): 45x40x10mm (1.77" x 1.57" x 0.39")
Weight: 54g (1.9 oz) incl. lead & plug
Connector: JR/Hitec (Futaba on request)

Requires a charger for 4.8V packs - see your hobby store.

To calculate how long to charge:
Check your charger's charge rate in mA. Then calculate:
900 ÷ [charge rate]. Then add 10% overcharge.
e.g. If charger is 50mA, charge for 18 plus 10% = 19.8 hours.

 Accessories for powering Receiver

The Pro X2 system already comes with an AC Adaptor to power your receiver at home.
For use in the field, where no AC power is available, here are some accessories to help.

CLA-S Cigarette Lighter Adaptor (short) US $8
This lets you power your receiver from your car's cigarette lighter.
It has a replaceable fuse, and a power indicator LED.

Although it is short, you can use it with the Receiver Extension Lead to operate the receiver a long way from your car.

Length: 65cm (25½").
Connectors: cigarette lighter plug to DC plug.

CLA-L Cigarette Lighter Adaptor (long) US $12
Like the one above, this lets you power your receiver from your car's cigarette lighter. The lead is tougher and longer than the version above.
It has a replaceable fuse.

Length: 1.5 metres (59").
Connectors: cigarette lighter plug to DC plug.

REL Receiver Extension Lead US $10
This extension lead will give you the extra reach you need for operating your receiver further from the power source. When used with the Cigarette Lighter Adapter, it lets you use your receiver 20 feet away from your car! Perhaps on your picnic table with your camcorder?

It also works with the included AC Adapter, and with the UFA and PPA accessories below.

Length: 6.1 metres (20 feet).
Connectors: DC socket to DC plug.

Actual lead is longer
than shown in picture

UFA Universal Field Adaptor US $10
Used in conjunction with the Cigarette Lighter Adaptor, this lets you power your receiver from any source of 12 volts that you can connect small alligator clips to, such as a Gell Cell battery.

Requires Cigarette Lighter Adaptor.

Length: 2 metres (6½ feet).
Connectors: alligator clips to cigarette lighter socket.

 Other Accessories

LAM Local Audio Microphone kit US $18
If you are using a camcorder or stereo VCR to record from your Pro X2, here's an accessory to make it complete.

You can now capture the event fully, by recording the local sounds as well as the remote audio. You'll get the comments and observations of the people controlling and witnessing the remote operation, perfectly "in sync" with the on-board video/audio. Great for post-flight analysis!

Virtually all currently available camcorders that have "A/V In" will record in stereo. You'll already be recording the transmitted audio on one channel (either left or right). Simply connect this accessory to the remaining channel and you'll now have 2 tracks: from on-board, and from your command area.

This pre-amplified microphone outputs "line-level" audio.
It shares power with the receiver by plugging into the included "power splitter cable", along with the receiver. Plug & Play!

Please note that the sound level on the ground will probably be much less than on your model, so during playback you may need to adjust the balance.

 KIT INCLUDES:

  - Microphone

  - Power splitter cable

  - An extra RCA cable is included for the extra audio
    (male RCA to male RCA)
